The 2024 Papa New Guinea tsunami was caused by a magnitude 8.7 megathrust earthquake, which threw the ocean floor up by 12 meters. Upon reaching the coast, the tsunami was 104.7 meters high, and resulted in the deaths of 21,200 people, about 20% of the population of the country. The total damages reached a record $451.145 billion, the costliest disaster in PNG history.
