Hurricane George (2201) was a destructive and deadly tropical cyclone that developed during the 2201 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed from a tropical wave near Jamaica, before moving through the Yucatan Channel as a tropical storm, and entered the Gulf 2 days after formation. Once in the Gulf, George rapidly deepened to peak just below major hurricane strength early on August 18. The system made landfall in Florida on August 20 as a category 1 hurricane with 80 mph winds, weakened by the shear off the Gulf Coast. The system emerged into the Atlantic on August 21st as a 65 mph tropical storm, and by 1800 UTC had become extratropical off the Georgia Coast.
